Joining the NSC

The NSC is essentially a group of enthusiastic saxophonists with a passion for playing and performing. We set high standards and expect each individual member to contribute both musically and with some aspect of the Choir's organisation, be that on the committee or in another capacity. We all work hard, but we are also a group of friends who have fun and socialise together. The expectations that are listed below ensure that we play to the best of our ability and get the most from playing in the Choir.

To join us, you need to be at least Grade 8 standard, over 18 and able to commit to rehearsals approximately once a month in Birmingham and gigs nationwide once every 4-6 weeks (this can vary depending on gig bookings). We also play at festivals and sax congresses overseas once or twice a year. Members are asked to confirm their attendance on our website well in advance so that their places can be filled if necessary. You must have regular access to the internet, as all correspondence is done through our website. Much of the Choir repertoire is memorised and includes some staging and choreography when performed. Any new member must be comfortable with performing in this way.

Read our full membership requirements and conditions in detail.

All players who want to join the Choir will be expected to do a full audition. Auditions to become a new member are more thorough than the annual ones that all existing members undertake, and include a workshop and interview.

Audition Requirements

  • Set pieces/excerpts. See download link below.
  • Own choice. 30 seconds of a piece of music that you think reflects you as a player.
  • Memorised piece.
  • Sight Reading. Approximately Grade 8 standard.
  • Interview. A chance for us to find out a bit more about you and for you to do the same.
  • Workshop. A group session with all the day's auditionees and some existing members of the Choir.

Audition material may be downloaded for free from Saxtet Publications.

We hold our main auditions annually (November 2009), when all existing members also re-audition. However, vacancies can arise throughout the year and when this happens we may hold interim auditions.

If you would like to be called for an audition, please fill out the application form below:
