Sax in the City, 10th October 2004

"'I always want to dance!' A sentiment from at least one member of the audience at the sparky Latin American start to an evening of diversity, including a world premiere arrangement of Rod Mould's sweetly accessible Egloga (The willow that fell in love with the wind's caress).

"Lilting romanticism led to an urgent central section, the various instruments smoothly handing on short phrases over velvety chordal accompaniment, after which an anxiously pressing pace eventually relaxed into broader, more fulsome sonorities. All in all a lovely work, perfect for this group of accomplished players.

"Versatility is the name of the game for the Birmingham-based National Saxophone Choir encompassing a range of instruments from tiny sopranino to huge bass, giving plenty of scope for contemporary composers, jazzy offerings, and arrangements of old favourites from the classics.

"The splendid trundling ox cart was wonderfully featured from some of Mussorgsky's Pictures, the evening ending with a rumbustious Highland fling sending us jigging to the night."
Maggie Cotton, Birmingham Post
